description String <p class="main">This, the fourth panel to be made, not only involved more sponsors but also more volunteers.  Many of those who were still embroidering at the end will mention their first piece being done for this panel.</p><p class="main">As a result of the experiences of attempting to involve local businesses on the Enterprise Panel, Kate realised that for many small businesses £500 minimum sponsorship was just too much even though some would have liked to be involved.  Kate said "The Lord Mayor&#8217;s Parade seemed to be a perfect event in which to involve them.  It would represent a civic occasion at the end of the millennium and have room to incorporate the flags of many organisations without losing the integrity of the design.  The idea was very popular and although it again took longer than we thought, we had little problem in &#8217;selling&#8217; the smaller flags".</p>

description String <p class="main">Initially there were to be about sixty people represented on the panel from both \r\npublic life and those less well-known who have made a contribution to Leeds. It \r\nwas hoped to have an equal balance of men and women and &#8216;positive discrimination&#8217; \r\nwas employed to portray the rich ethnic diversity of the city. As with other panels, \r\ndespite requests through the media, volunteer newsletters and word of mouth, nominations \r\nwere slow in coming. There was slightly more success when the full-scale cartoon \r\nof the panel beautifully drawn by Anne Croft, was displayed at two of the fund-raising \r\nlunches.</p>\r\n<p class="main">Ann Wheatley and six other volunteers formed a team to sift through the nominations \r\n    finally received. Flt Sgt Arthur Louis Aaron VC was the most popular choice \r\n    to be represented with Dennis Healey, Phyllis Pask, Danny Freeman, PM Asquith, \r\n    Brian Close and Gael Lindenfield also raising many votes. Some nominations \r\n    were for relatively unknown people and it was part of the team&#8217;s task \r\n    to find out whether they merited inclusion. Several failed to get onto the \r\n    panel because images of them have still not been found. Mary Seacole (a heroine \r\n    of the stature of Florence Nightingale) and Dr Ashoke Bannerjea (first black \r\n    magistrate in Leeds) fall into this category.</p>

description String <p class="main">The textile and industrial heritage panel is an amalgamation of two original \r\n    panels, Kate&#8217;s original design for <em>Textiles</em> had a background of decoupage \r\n    screening, using modern reproductions printed on wrapping paper, cards and \r\n    in books as well as using photographs taken by Paul Wilkinson (son of Jackie) \r\n    of an original screen at Armley Mills. Following this theme the original <a href="/08_contact.php?action=tapMed&refNo=14>Industry</a> \r\n    panel was to have a background of engineering drawings and blue prints with \r\n    historic bus tickets donated by Donald Wilson and his friends. When it was \r\n    decided that we should stop seeking sponsors to make both panels the two panels \r\n    were brought together. </p>\r\n<p class="main">The idea for the final background of lighter fabrics, with domestic and feminine \r\n    connotations at the top and the heavier fabrics, with a more industrial and \r\n    masculine feel, at the bottom, did however evolve from the original ideas. \r\n    The two themes of textiles and engineering work well together as they go hand \r\n    in hand with the history of Leeds.</p>

description String <p class="main">This panel had almost as tortuous a route to completion as did Faith in Leeds. \r\n    Much of the research, discussion and fund-raising had been completed by 1998 \r\n    but other elements of the project were by this time so overwhelming that the \r\n    possibility of &#8216;space of mind&#8217; for designing seemed out of the \r\n    question.</p>\r\n<p class="main">In 1998 Kate approached the Board of Trustees with the idea that another artist \r\n    be commissioned to design the panel to represent health. She had in mind Paddy \r\n    Killer whose work she knew and had long admired and who has many connections \r\n    with the region. It was very exciting when both the Board of Trustees and \r\n    Paddy herself agreed to the proposal that she be commissioned not only to \r\n    design the panel, but to run a series of master classes. In these classes \r\n    she would teach already experienced artists and machinists to work in her \r\n    impeccable style. The first weekend workshop was chaotic, so many people had \r\n    signed up that Paddy found it difficult to make herself heard against the \r\n    general din. Embroiderers learning new techniques can sometimes behave like \r\n    small children on Christmas morning. Paddy was probably relieved to find that \r\n    over the months the number of volunteers dwindled to a more manageable size. \r\n</p>

description String <p class="main">The design for this panel was inspired by Paddy Killer&#8217;s work for A Picture \r\n    of Health. Twenty embroiderers from complete beginners to professionals worked \r\n    the crests in the border. There were several attempts to piece it all together \r\n    before we called in the Night Owls quilters. Chris Richardson from the group \r\n    deserves a medal. She stopped work on her husband&#8217;s Christmas present \r\n    to help out and finished the whole background. Her finished piece was stretched \r\n    on a frame and the text borders, buildings and figures were then appliqued \r\n    on by hand. </p>

description String <p class="main">The processes of research, discussion and fund-raising were the most time-consuming \r\n    elements on all panels but on this panel more than most. Over 1,000 community \r\n    groups were approached by letter and hundreds more by word of mouth through \r\n    the volunteer network.</p>\r\n<p class="main">The main principles of the design held fast more or less throughout &#8211; \r\n    a bonfire in the distance with fireworks against the night sky and a procession \r\n    inspired by the wondrous festival originating in Chapeltown (now called the \r\n    Leeds Festival) which happens every August Bank Holiday winding from the top \r\n    of the panel to the foreground. On either side of the road are &#8216;audiences&#8217; \r\n    made up of groups and individuals; to the right those found in more urban \r\n    environments; to the left more rural.</p>\r\n<p class="main">Unlike Civic Pride the majority of the embroidered people are real. Most of \r\n    the projects started as photographic images giving many of the volunteers \r\n    more confidence to work on them. Many were photographed for the Tapestry as \r\n    organisations and the individuals have not yet been identified. Others were \r\n    included because of their individual contribution to community projects.\r\n</p>

description String <p class="main">The idea of presenting the sports images as the front page of a colourful comic \r\n    newspaper appealed to Kate, partly to get across the lively participatory \r\n    nature of Sporting Life. For similar reasons she was very keen to get young \r\n    people &#8211; especially graffiti &#8216;artists&#8217; involved in the designing \r\n    of this panel. The Leeds TEC (Technical Education Council) through Norah Keaney, \r\n    supported this through an Artist&#8217;s Residency at Intake High School and \r\n    Art College. Kate spent a day a week at the college for several months working \r\n    with Mike Jolly, Head of Art, in setting up a studio in the sixth form classroom. \r\n    Many students were involved (Angela Lambert, Leon Barham, Lisa Dickinson, \r\n    Natalie Gains,Tana Massey and Gemma Stocks) in collaborative design for the \r\n    Tapestry. The graffiti-style logo, the cartoon rugby players, the gumnasts, \r\n    skateboarders and Leeds Stadium all came out of this process. The ice skater \r\n    was spotted in the current college newsletter and brilliantly interpreted \r\n    by Renee Silverman, whose capacity for challenge and experiment is still growing. \r\n</p>

description String <p class="main">In 1994 when the <em>West Riding Rag Ruggers</em> and their chair, Isabel Waterhouse, \r\n    expressed their enthusiasm for taking part in producing one of the panels, \r\n    it was obvious that <em>Environment City</em> was the one. The process of \r\n    cutting discarded fabric into strips and then hooking or prodding them into \r\n    canvas or hessian to make rugs was perfectly in keeping with the current ideas \r\n    of re-cycling and sustainability. This process was widely used by families \r\n    during the war years and throughout the Industrial Revolution. Leeds City \r\n    Council had won the &#8216;Environment City&#8217; award in 1993 so the title \r\n    was already chosen for us.</p>

description String <p class="main">River, canal, rail and road have all been important in the development of Leeds \r\n    from small town to major city. This panel celebrates all forms of transport, \r\n    from the humble delivery bike used by Brian Jackson to serve his father&#8217;s \r\n    shop, to the Fairey Swordfish built under contract by Blackburn Aircraft Ltd, \r\n    Olympia Works, Roundhay Road during the Second World Ware. The loop road is \r\n    now serving to keep traffic away from the city centre, making it more pleasant \r\n    to shop and work within Leeds. </p>\r\n<p class="main">The design concept for <em>On the Move</em> was of historic maps, stained, \r\n    monochromatic and suitably &#8216;aged&#8217; with time marching on and upwards \r\n    on the panel. This culminates in a full-colour city map showing up-to-the-minute \r\n    transport changes at the beginning of the year 2000.\r\n</p>

description String <p class="main">Everyone thought that this panel would easily attract sponsorship and therefore \r\n    move quickly and be great fun to stitch. In fact it took all of seven years \r\n    (from 1993 to 2001). This was partly because it was designed in labour intensive \r\n    counted thread work in response to the number of potential volunteers who \r\n    wanted to work in this way.</p>\r\n<p class="main">Many of the three-dimensional flowers, leaves and insects that decorate the \r\n    borders were made in needlelace. (A single flower can easily take fifteen \r\n    to twenty hours in this technique). Many &#8216;foliage&#8217; workshops were \r\n    held to involve new volunteers and we are still searching for the names of \r\n    everyone who made a leaf!</p>\r\n<p class="main">The panel represents the four seasons with Kirkstall Abbey in the spring, the \r\n    Queen&#8217;s Hotel in summer, Roundhay&#8217;s Tropical House and Rose Garden \r\n    in autumn and Harewood in winter.\r\n</p>

description String <p class="main">During the process of fund raising for this panel, many hundreds of conversations \r\n    generating ideas for the content of this panel were held. Gradually the idea \r\n    formed of creating the image of a decorative pin-board that might be in the \r\n    office of the Director of Museums and Galleries. On it would be a collection \r\n    of posters, prints, postcards and photographs showing a range of art objects \r\n    and activities; perhaps a letter or card from an artist, composer or dancer.</p>\r\n<p class="main">Chris Richardson and the Night Owls Quilting Group produced the beautiful pieced \r\n    backcloth which will form the &#8216;pinboard&#8217;. Work is now in progress \r\n    on the &#8216;art works&#8217; which will be displayed on the pinboard and \r\n    we anticipate completion in 2004.\r\n</p>

description String <p class="main">During the last 10 years or so of the second Millennium the built environment \r\n    of Leeds changed dramatically. The title <em>LS2000</em> suggesting a postcode \r\n    brings together geographical location, the year and co-incidentally the approximate \r\n    number of people involved in some way in making the whole Tapestry. </p>\r\n<p class="main">Putting this panel together was a nightmare for Kate and the Team. The process \r\n    involved extensively researching specialist conservation glues, several 16-hour \r\n    days, sleepless nights, hair dryers, lots of breath holding, finger crossing, \r\n    very heavy books and dozens of boxes of tapestry postcards.\r\n</p>

description String <p class="main">The first public venue for the Tapestry was offered to us in 1993/4 by John \r\n    Bade, Centre Director of the Victoria Quarter &#8211; a perfect place for \r\n    people to <em>drop in</em> and talk about what could be in the panels. The \r\n    beautifully restored arcades became a symbol of the City Centre Management&#8217;s \r\n    vision for a European City &#8211; with outdoor cafes, good coffee, street \r\n    performers, public art and a general air of <em>joi de vivre</em>.</p>\r\n<p class="main">This was one of the first four panels to be completed (1998) before we bought \r\n    state of the art computer equipment, courtesy of the Arts Council Lottery \r\n    Programme. From 1999 onwards we scanned each completed piece of embroidery \r\n    before collating the panels. This is why the quality of the imagery is so \r\n    much better on the rest of the Tapestry. We are still working on improving \r\n    the quality of the earlier panels so watch this space!<br>\r\n</p>

description String <p class="main">As the first two of the originally intended twenty four panels to be completed, \r\n    <em>Money Works</em> and <em>Pro Lege et Rege</em> have similar background \r\n    colours. They also share similarities in design; the earth in place of the \r\n    Leeds Coat of Arms, the buildings in a similar scale and position and the \r\n    documents, charters and certificates in the foreground. The charge certificate \r\n    with the border of decorative shields appears on both panels.</p>\r\n<p class="main">This panel was a joy to put together. Assisted by Freda Copley, Sue and Sarah \r\n    Hodgson on the design and construction side and a whole host of cheerful stitchers, \r\n    there was a great deal of laughter in the Burling and Mending room at Armley \r\n    Mills and plenty of tea and biscuits to restore energy. All the problems of \r\n    the world, not just the financial sector, were resolved as needles and tongues \r\n    worked together in close harmony.\r\n</p>

description String <p class="main">The idea for a tapestry showing Leeds life was partly inspired by the wonderful \r\n    &#8216;Keeping Glasgow in Stitches&#8217; (12 banners produced by the community) \r\n    partly from Kate&#8217;s already established practice of producing art work \r\n    in collaboration with others and partly through being on the Leeds Common \r\n    Purpose programme. Meeting people from all sectors of the city with whom to \r\n    discuss the project, gradually it began to take shape over the year of the \r\n    programme 92/93.</p>\r\n<p class="main">The strength of the economy of the city seemed to lie in the close relationship \r\n    of the Legal and Financial sectors, which was one good reason to begin with \r\n    these related themes. The motto &#8216;Pro Rege et Rege&#8217; &#8211; &#8216;For \r\n    King and Law&#8217; on the city coat of arms was an obvious choice for this \r\n    first panel completed in 1995.</p>\r\n<p class="main">Together with <em>Money Works</em>, <em>Enterprise</em> and <em>Civic Pride</em> \r\n    the individual sections of embroidery were not digitally recorded as was the \r\n    rest of the Tapestry. We are still hoping to improve the quality of these \r\n    images.</p>
